Shape

My next move

See your next step before you take it.

A personal choice is ahead of you. Perhaps not today, but close enough not to start thinking about it only when you have to answer. Shape helps you make visible in advance what matters to you, which direction fits that, and what you want to judge your next step by.

Who it's for

Experienced professionals and leaders facing a next step who don't want that choice to be determined only by what is logical, familiar or first available.

When

Before you have to respond to a new role, reorganisation, departure, offer or other change that calls for a personal choice.

What you build

A personal decision framework in images: what matters to you, which direction fits, which steps you take and how you tell that story.

Know what you want to choose on before you have to choose.

The moment a real choice is on the table, time pressure arrives by itself. A new role, a reorganisation, an offer, or the idea of starting something of your own. If you still have to discover what genuinely matters to you at that point, the option that feels most logical or available easily takes over. Shape turns that around. You make your own criteria visible before you need them.

This is you if:

  • Your role is changing

you want to determine which work and which responsibility you want more, or less, of

  • Your organisation is changing

a reorganisation, merger or other move forces you to look at your own place again

  • There's an opportunity on the table

a new position or offer sounds attractive, but you want to know whether it genuinely fits you

  • You're considering something of your own

you want to explore whether working for yourself fits your direction before you take the leap

Without your own criteria you keep comparing options or responding to whatever presents itself. Shape makes visible what weighs heavily for you, so you can test an opportunity against your direction instead of the other way around.

This is what you notice first:

  • “You get in the car on Monday morning and you're not sure you're heading the right way.”
  • “You clicked through, and only afterwards wondered why.”
  • “Someone asks what you want and you hear yourself say something that isn't true.”
  • “You said no three times before you knew why.”

What matters in a next move therefore often remains unspoken. Picture First helps make it visible before you choose.

The method

Look first. Then make sense of it. Then decide.

One day, or four half-days. One to one.

You work at an inspiring location, inside and/or outside, with a camera and on paper. What you photograph shows what you value, more sharply than words can. Your photographs are on the table during the same session.

    Looking back

What you've built, and what keeps recurring in it.

  2. 2

    Looking ahead

What it looks like when it's right.

  3. 3

    Deciding

What you start, stop and keep. With a date on it.

  4. 4

    Telling it

The story behind it: what you say when someone asks why.

  5. 5

    Putting it into practice

Does your choice hold up in practice? What will you set in motion first?

The method was developed and tested inside a large international organisation. I've run more than eighty sessions with it, for fifteen hundred people. I now do it one to one.

WHAT YOU TAKE WITH YOU

The main result is your own decision framework for a next step: made visible in images, translated into a direction and tied to concrete action.

Tangible

Your visual anchor

Your own values and selected images, printed, with what each image means to you. A reference point to return to when another choice comes up.

Your next steps

What you start, stop and keep doing. Concrete and tied to a date, so something actually changes on Monday.

What you also take with you

A way to explore future choices and tell your direction clearly to a manager, your network or a future employer.

Includes prints, materials and a short guide. After six weeks, we look back at what has actually changed.

No coaching report that disappears into a drawer. A visual anchor, a next move and skills you can use again.

When do you use this

You go home with two things: a set of images that shows what you already put to use and what still gets too little room, and the ability to talk about it clearly. Sometimes you put those images on the table. More often you just need them to know what to say.

With new people.

In an interview, or your first weeks in a team. You don't lay prints on the table, but you know which image belongs to it. So you tell them not what your CV says, but what it doesn't.

In a new role.

When you take on a role, or want to reshape the one you have. You know which part of your set you're not using yet, and that's what you aim the conversation with your manager at.

At a decision you're unsure about.

There's a choice on the table and you don't know if it's yours. You put your set beside it and you see whether it fits what's already there, or the gap you wanted to fill.

The set doesn't just show what you have. It shows where you're heading, and that's what you can act on this week.

Pick the one that fits where you are.

Not a coaching programme, and not a report.

With coaching, the conversation is usually central. With Shape you work through a fixed visual method towards concrete results: a personal set of images, choices with actions and dates, and a story you can use in conversations with your manager, your network or a future employer.

About me

Portrait of Harm Hendriks, looking to the right.
During Shape, I guide your thinking. I bring structure, ask questions, make connections and reflect what I see in your story and in the images you create. Sometimes I help you slow down and look more closely. At other moments, I help you sharpen a choice and move forward. I keep the process on track: where are you now, what are you really trying to answer and where are you going round in circles? I do not give you the answer. The choice remains yours. My role is to make sure you work step by step towards something you can choose and act on. Twenty-five years in international organisations and twenty years of improvised theatre form the background to how I do that. I have worked in small and large teams, across different countries and cultures. I developed strategy, translated it into plans and was then responsible for delivery. As a people manager and director, I have led teams and reorganisations. I was a mentor, completed an internal coaching programme and developed leadership programmes. Improvisation taught me something different: to listen well, build on what someone brings and see the structure in a story that is not yet finished. Those two worlds come together in Shape: I look with you, ask further and help you see more clearly what your next step is.
